Internet Etiquette - Think Before You Write

Negative or nasty comments in emails or on message boards can get people extremely angry. Responding to such messages immediately often leads to saying things you may regret later. Instead, take some time to cool off, and consider your reply carefully. That way your response can be clearly thought out, and less likely to make matters worse.

Internet Etiquette - Flaming

A flame is an online shouting match, complete with insults and personality attacks. Flame wars are common problems on message boards, and participating in one can even get you banned from the board. The best way to avoid a flame war? Don¡¯t give the flamer the dignity of a reply.

Accessing Computer Registry

Before you try to make any changes to your computer registry, make sure that Windows XP¡¯s System Restore option is turned on. Some users disable this feature because it eats a lot of system resources, but it should be turned on if you¡¯re going to make registry changes.

To reactivate System restore, single-click My Computer with the right mouse button and choose Properties. If the box marked Turn Off System restore on All Drives is checked, System Restore is deactivated. Click the box to remove the checkmark.

Restrictions on Outlook Express Attachments

If you use Outlook Express, you may find you can¡¯t save email attachments, and that an image an email appears as a little red x. Don¡¯t worry¡ªyour computer isn¡¯t messed up (although running a regular computer health and safety check is never a bad idea). You need to change Outlook Expresses security options. Open the Tools menu and single-click Options with the left mouse button. In the Options dialog box, single-click the Security tab. Now click the box marked ¡°Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus¡¯ so the checkmark is removed from the box. Single-click the Apply button to save your new settings, and then single-click OK. You will now be able to view attachments (just make sure your antivirus program is up-to-date first).

Tips and Tricks on Searching the Internet - Using Quotes in Searches

If your Internet search produces very general results, try enclosing your search term in quotations. The search engine will view any term in quotes as a phrase, and will look specifically for that phrase. The term "computer diagnostic scan," in quotes, will yield fewer, and more specific, results than typing in the phrase without quotes.
