Posture vs. Pose
Posture, pose or asana ¨C which is correct?
They all are. These words are used interchangeably. They all mean the same thing.
You¡¯ll find that it¡¯s often personal preference that determines which word a person uses.
Yoga
Yoga is defined in the American Heritage College Dictionary as ¡°1. A Hindu discipline aimed at training the consciousness for a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility. 2. A system of exercises practiced as part of this discipline to promote control of the body and mind.¡±
What¡¯s important to note is that yoga in NOT defined as a religion or lifestyle. It is a union between body and mind, which is beneficial to physical and mental health.
Tadasana/Mountain Pose
Tadasana is the formal name for Mountain Pose.
It¡¯s the most fundamental standing posture, and also the basis for all other standing postures.
TriYoga
TriYoga is a derivative of Hatha Yoga with an emphasis on the ¡°union of postures, breath and focus¡± to form a flow. Kali Ray, an internationally-known yoga instructor, is the founder of this program, thus it is often referred to as Kali Ray TriYoga.
Savasana/Corpse Pose
Savasana is the formal name for Corpse Pose.
This is the basic reclining or relaxation pose.
Differences: Yoga vs. Pilates
There are both differences and similarities between Yoga and Pilates. The biggest difference is that Pilates uses a line of equipment that does not exist in yoga. But the theory of mind-body connection exists in both Yoga and Pilates. They also share a fluidity of movement.
English vs Indian Names
People are often confused by the different names used in yoga.
What?s the difference between poses or postures or asanas? How is Mountain Pose different from Tadasana?
Well, there really isn?t any difference. And Mountain Pose and Tadasana are the same posture. You?ll find much of it is just preference.
Often instructors will use both the traditional Indian name as well as the more common English name to help students learn both.
Yogi or Yogini
A YOGI is a male student of yoga.
A YOGINI is a female student of yoga.
