Show Up Early
Show up for the viewing early at a live auction, and take a good look at all items. Compare the quality of similar pieces.
Talk to Auctioneer
When attending a live auction, if at all possible, and if he is available, ask questions of the auctioneer about items in which you are interested.
Did You Yawn or Was That a Bid?
When attending a live auction, don?t worry about what you?ve seen on television when bidders inadvertently bid by way of a nervous twitch or yawn. Auctioneers will be looking for a clear hand signal from you, and if they are in any doubt they will usually ask. If you make a bid by mistake, tell the auctioneer immediately.
Arm Yourself
When attending a live auction preview, arm yourself with a cellphone and a phonebook in your car so you can call around and check prices before the bidding starts.
Talk to Auction Staff
When attending a live auction, ask questions of the auction staff to compare their answers to those of the auctioneer. The auctioneer is setting up "the sale" during the viewing. The staff might tell you something different, and may give you a "real world" idea of what some items usually go for. But remember, they may also be well trained by the auctioneer, so listen, and don?t trust everything you hear.
Listen Carefully
At a live auction, listen carefully as the auctioneer describes the item at the start of the bidding, as this is the time any changes in the lot will be stated.
